Stripe Patterns All About the Types of Stripes TREASURIE

stripe design

There’s the documentation and developer products that supplement the integration experience. A redesign of the information architecture of our documentation made relevant guides easier to find. Stripe Samples allows developers who prefer to learn by example rather than prose to just start with some working code. A redesign of the payments view in the Stripe Dashboard allows developers to more easily debug and understand the PaymentIntent state machine. It offers a standardized approach to design, ensuring consistency across various platforms and devices. With its easy-to-use components and extensive documentation, the Stripe Design System empowers developers and designers to streamline their workflow, saving valuable time and effort.

Decorating with stripes – 15 smart striped room ideas

They can help you improve your place's interior design and fashion style. Sometimes, though, you must be careful when choosing stripe patterns, as some are too bold and playful. These stripe patterns have an elegant design with the lines placed adjacent to each other to create a shadow. These vertical types of stripes have two or more colors, usually, a white background paired with pastel colors, such as blue, pink, and/or yellow.

Make a staircase feel wider and longer with stripes

Taking inspiration from the fabric world where stripes are everywhere, flooring has now caught up and offers a far greater choice of designs than ever before. These are our favorite striped room ideas – we dare you not to be charmed. Herringbone, chevron, brick-style or blocky, there are so many ways to position metro tiles, but this is one of our favourites. Arranged vertically, these create horizontal stripes for a simple look and, thanks to their mottled glazed finish, bring a relaxed rustic feel.

Stripe Terminal provides platforms and enterprises with developer tools, precertified card readers, Tap to Pay on compatible iPhone and Android devices, and cloud-based device management. Our simple packaging of PaymentIntents for U.S. and Canadian card payments requires the same amount of effort to integrate as Charges. A team of five people—four engineers and a PM—walked through every payment method we supported and we could imagine supporting in the future. We iterated on an API design that would be able to model all of them.

This allows you to define a set of styles that will be applied globally to all components, giving your design a consistent and cohesive look and feel. Screen readers are vital tools for individuals with visual impairments. A well-designed layout is essential for creating visually pleasing and organized interfaces.

Use layout components to create the structure of your pages and elements. These determine which view of your app the user sees at different moments, similar to different HTML pages of a website. All components are available in Figma at @stripedesign on Figma Community. Use this pattern to make sure users clearly understand that they’re connecting to Stripe. Use this pattern to make sure users can track step-by-step progress toward a specific task.

When a user adds a new app from the App Marketplace, the dock updates to show the new app’s icon. Header houses your app name, view name, external link to your product, and a few top level actions that the user can perform on your app. The app drawer serves as the entry point for all apps a user has installed. A surface is a viewport corresponding to a page on the Stripe Dashboard. When users install an app that uses UI extensions, the app appears in a dock.

It includes the payment scheme and the credentials needed to move money, like card information or the customer’s name or email. For some methods, like Alipay, only the payment method name is required because the payment method itself handles collecting further information after you redirect to their site. The Stripe Design System offers a set of form components that help you build user-friendly and accessible forms.

There's an abundance of ways that stripes can be used to take your floor from overlooked to eye-catching. An elegant bathroom if ever we saw one, this white and russet red colour combination creates a sophisticated scheme. Also note the varying thickness of stripes, which contribute to a more understated look. Striped flooring not only creates an uplifting design detail but also helps to anchor a decorating scheme, drawing the eye down.

Often, kitchen spaces can feel quite clinical and functional, so the addition of color and pattern such as this helps to bring a decorative edge to a practical part of the home. The trick is to only have a single maximalist print, as seen here in the chairs. This allows them to shine while the subtler prints on the wall and at the windows blend into the background. Introduce an arty feel by teaming a striped lampshade with a range of other graphic lines and bold colours.

Horizontally placed “v” stripes will make you look broader while vertically placed ones will make you appear slimmer and taller. Although more common in menswear, Bengal stripes are becoming a norm in female fashion, especially since we’re becoming a more non-gender-exclusive world. Also known as the tiger stripe, it has two colors, light and dark, distributed alternately and spaced at one-fourth inch. Each stripe has a width that isn’t as wide as the awning stripe but not as thin as the candy stripe. From the name itself, this type of stripe was patterned from the Universal Product Code.

Mayor Judy Wagner recalled the Bull Run Inn, as it was known, and Campus Bowling Lanes had been located across Sixth Street in what’s now Hufnagle Park. Both burned to the ground in 1972 and the bar and restaurant, sans bowling alley, relocated to the present location. That change will come by fall, with Bull Run offering morning meals all week in its dining area off Sixth Street.

Boomtown Brewery

West Branch Craft Brewing remains on site, leasing a portion of the rear of the Bull Run since last year. Klinger said a wider selection of the in-house craft brew will be available among the pub’s 20 draft beers. Entrees like baby back ribs and fish and chips remain, soon to include steaks and different seafood. The kitchen’s smoker will become a more prevalent tool as the menu evolves. Providing a relaxed casual atmosphere, feel at home while you lounge by the fireplace enjoying a cocktail (or two) with friends. Try one of the brews from our local Breweries or wines and spirits served by our friendly staff.

The Best Restaurants For Drinking Beer

Even during peak weekend hours, you’ll always be able to find an open table, and when you get hungry, you’ll find a food truck or two parked out front. If you think you took a wrong turn and ended up in a warehouse yard, you’re at the right place. Boomtown Brewing is the most fun thing happening on this extra-industrial block of the Arts District, and somewhere you can fit a lot of people on a weekend afternoon.

Any place that sells marked-up bottles and bowls of olives can call itself a wine bar. These 17 spots prove the genre can be a whole lot more. To the side, the dining area, which seats up to 100, will be keyed to attract families for casual dining — with the space between the pub acting as a buffer. Klinger plans some aesthetic changes over the coming months but no major renovations to the dining or bar areas, as of yet. Los Angeles Ale Works

Head there the next time you’re looking for a place to drink dry-hopped saisons and meet someone with a color-coordinated tote bag. LA's massive craft beer wave of the 2010s has long subsided, but there are still plenty of great places to drink a local pint. But hanging out in an LA brewery means more than just drinking good beer—it's about having a good time, too. From tiny tap rooms in the South Bay to sprawling warehouses in DTLA filled with games and dance floors, these are the 15 best breweries in LA. Casual restaurant with an extensive bottled beer menu and over 40 beers on tap. Family friendly with a children's menu too.Bull Run Taphouse is not only a great place to watch sports, but also a great place to listen to local music.

We also like that the short menu of draft beers is big on IPAs, including the citrusy Figure 8 that you can order by the pitcher. Open since late 2023, Solarc is one of the newer breweries in LA—and one of the most unique, too. Rather than a typical line-up of IPAs and lagers, this Glassell Park brewery specializes in gruit, a medieval style of beer made with bittering agents other than hops. At Solarc, that means beer flavored with things like wormwood, black tea, and turmeric, and fermented with wild yeasts collected around Los Angeles. The whole operation is bordering on being a Portlandia sketch, but there’s no denying that hanging for a few hours in their quirky, colorful space (the walls are literally covered in aluminum foil) is a great way to spend a Sunday.

All Season Brewing

Between an alleyway and two giant warehouses, there’s plenty of seating. Expect nearly 20 beers on the menu including crisp rice lagers, fruity sours, and a tasty California IPA humorously called the Nose Job. You’ll also usually find some kind of entertainment happening at any given time, from ping pong to pool to the occasional live DJ set.

The massive warehouse tends to be full of 30-somethings gathered to discuss cryptocurrency or watch sports, and there's a great collection of IPAs, lagers, stouts, and sours to carry everyone through the night. There’s no food inside, but there’s usually vendors selling pizza, tacos, and burgers out front. When it’s warm,  take advantage of outdoor picnic tables spread across the astroturf lawn.

This is where you should be drinking hoppy pilsners before a Dodgers game. There are plenty of sprawling warehouse breweries in LA, but Browuerji West in San Pedro beats them all in square footage. This brewery on the docks of Port of LA occupies a WWII-era naval warehouse so large it could host a regulation flag football game. Aside from the huge indoor taproom, there’s a big outdoor courtyard with food trucks and live music on weekends, and a marketplace selling local crafts across the street.

They also have a smaller tasting room in Culver City right next to the metro. Originally from Georgia, Creature Comforts is a Downtown brewery in the same complex as Rossoblu and Dama. The industrial space has a large interior with plenty of TVs, plus a giant wrap-around front patio ideal for getting a little red on a Saturday afternoon. They’ve got around 12 different beers on tap ranging from Belgian-style pilsners to a sour ale, but we tend to go for the Bigger Dreams, a hazy IPA with heavy notes of tangerine and grapefruit.

Homage Brewing is for people who love good beer but also want to dance. There’s a pleasant patio out front where you might spot a couple of toddlers with their tattooed parents. But the real scene is inside the garage, which has a long bar, a disco ball, and (on weekends) a DJ spinning vinyl. Most people come here to sip housemade IPAs and snack on masa-battered chicken wings during the day, but on Friday and Saturday nights, the dance floor is packed until 1am.

If you’re looking for a quick drink before dinner, Creature Comforts is a great low-key option. Paperback Brewing has very good beer, especially if you’re a hazy IPA connoisseur, but the biggest reason we love this Glendale brewery is its space. Located in an old 1940s-era airplane hangar, drinking at Paperback feels like you’re in line for Soarin’ Around The World at California Adventure, except the only ride here is sitting and relaxing for a few hours.

Special Events

As impressive as the space is, the beer is even better. Don’t miss the top-selling Dog Ate My Homework—a purplish, juicy blackberry saison—or Popfuji, a malty, refreshing unfiltered pilsner. If you’ve spent much time in the South Bay, you’ve probably driven past LA Ale Works' taproom in Hawthorne, a few blocks from SpaceX (and right across the street from another solid brewery, Common Space). Ale Works is a good spot to host a party when you don't know how many people will show up.

Ballast Point Brewing LB

All Season Brewing in Mid-Wilshire is geographically central, making it an easy place to bring together people who live on opposite sides of the city. Which might also explain why this place is perpetually packed. Housed in a former car service station, All Season has indoor and outdoor seating, a row of skeeball machines, and a Chicas Taco window out back, so you don’t have to wander far for food.

This all-Belgian brewery in Torrance was one of the first places on the West Coast to kick off the hazy/juicy IPA craze, with every brewery from here to Seattle following suit. Expect a rotating roster of food trucks in the evening, and a large selection of cans available to-go. One of the smallest breweries on this guide, Frogtown feels a bit like you’re hanging out in your friend’s garage, except there’s an industrial brewing set-up instead of an unused homebrew kit. The Lites Out pilsner is ideal if you’re there in the daytime (it’s only 4.1% ABV), but there's also a good selection of hazy and milkshake IPAs if you want to kick things up a bit in the evening. There's usually a food truck on-site most evenings, but you can also bring in food—on weekend afternoons our move is to walk over to Wax Paper right up the block for a post-pilsner sandwich. The giant patio is filled with wooden benches, tree stumps, and metal structures, achieving something that feels like a grown-up summer camp where people overuse the word "dude." Plus, food pop-ups operate most nights.

They have a wonderful arcade for the kids and a very nice banquet area as well. Highly recommend this place for something as simple as a lunch or dinner or as a rental space. Throwing a retirement party, having a baby shower, or hosting a meeting?

I-81 Viaduct Project Contracts Department of Transportation

nysdot design build

Additionally, beginning on or about Monday, April 15, at 9 a.m., the following ramps at the northern interchange of I-81/I-481 in the Town of Cicero, Onondaga County, will be closed to traffic. GLYNNdesignbuild is a custom architecture and general contracting company in Los Angeles, California offering both design-build and traditional general contracting services and full architectural service. Although our specialty is design-build, we often build for other Owners as acting General Contractor working with an Architect. Neri’s order states that demolition of the viaduct could not begin until the supplement is completed, though he did allow work on the early contracts to proceed. Attorneys for Renew 81 then sought to reargue their points in order to prevent any work from moving forward, but in May the judge denied the request.

Kosciuszko Bridge Design-Build Project, Phase 1

When working with other Architects as part of a team, we are able to quickly grasp the design intent and offer architectural detailing support if requested. We hold weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the Owner and Architect to outline the project schedule, upcoming details, review change orders, and discuss any questions the team may have. The design-build contract focuses on constructing the northern interchange of Business Loop 81 (BL 81) and Interstate 81 (I-81) and reconstructing the new section of I-81 (former I-481) between Kirkville Road and the New York State Thruway (I-90). However, only work on the first three of eight planned contracts may currently proceed. Earlier this year, Onondaga County Supreme Court Judge Gerard Neri ordered the state to produce a supplemental environmental impact statement addressing issues raised by community advocates who oppose the community grid design.

I81 and BL81 Southern Interchange

The joint venture firm identified at least 20 community-based stakeholder organizations to engage as part of the pre-construction design-build process, with a particular focus on Spanish-language outreach. Our projects range from residential remodels, new custom homes, site planning, sustainable design and construction, landscape environments, hillside expansions and repair, in-house custom woodworking and concrete, boutique retail spaces, and industrial contemporary office renovations. Further contracts under the community grid plan would cover reconstruction of parts of I-690, which meets I-81 in downtown Syracuse, demolition of the viaduct, construction of Business Loop 81 and various bridge replacements, street reconstructions and other local street improvements. State transportation officials had planned for work on some of those contracts to start this year. With Board approval of this contract, SFTC will as part of Phase 1 review existing design work, conduct constructability review, value engineering, bottoms-up cost estimate and schedule.

Featured Developments

The I-81 Viaduct Project Contract 1 will reconstruct the section of I-81 at the interchange of I-481 to BL 81 and convert I-481 to the new I-81 between Kirkville Road and the northern I-81/I-481 Interchange. NYSDOT continues to move forward with preparations for the start of the I-81 Viaduct project. Here you will find contract and phasing information as the project advances. While procedural in nature, this information is important to continue towards advancing this project to groundbreaking in 2022. “The project would result in traffic delays and backups (making the community grid into community gridlock),” attorneys for Renew 81 wrote in a court filing.

The rail line will also provide key linkages with Metro bus lines, including the G Line (Orange) in Van Nuys and municipally operated bus lines. "Having engaged Dynamic Builders to construct some twenty industrial buildings, I am pleased to report that each project was delivered per agreed-upon construction specifications, in a timely manner, and at or below the construction contract price." The New York State Department of Transportation is alerting motorists that Interstate 81 northbound will be closed to traffic between Exit 16A and the interchange with Interstate 481 northbound in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, for two consecutive weekends beginning at 7 p.m. HNTB served as lead designer for the new Kosciuszko Bridge Project, which carries traffic over Newtown Creek between Brooklyn and Queens, New York. A new cable-stayed bridge, which replaces the structurally deficient, 76-year-old existing span, is among the region’s first major cable-stayed bridges. As the New York State Department of Transportation’s largest-ever design-build project, it also sets the precedent for future design-builds statewide.

Metro is planning to employ Progressive Design-Build (PDB), an innovative and potentially cost-efficient construction methodology, to build the light rail line. PDB has become more common in public-sector projects in recent years and has proven to help decrease project change orders, delays and cost overruns. PDB can also help reduce scope and schedule creep by addressing the highest risk elements much earlier in the process, well before construction begins. We offer schematic design/early design study, site planning, construction documents, and permitting. Full construction services include cost analysis, feasibility study, schedule analysis, construction, construction management, and client representation. The newly awarded contract’s scope covers reconstruction of the current southern interchange of I-81 and I-481, reconstruction of another I-481 interchange with State Routes 5 and 92 and improvements along other stretches of the interstate highway loop.

The plan calls for I-81 to be rerouted from a viaduct through Syracuse to the existing path of I-481, which loops around the city. The state-favored design, known as the “community grid” plan, would involve demolishing the 1.4-mile viaduct and replacing it with an at-grade road that would be designated Business Loop 81. Controversy continues to swirl around the $2.25-billion Interstate 81 Viaduct Project in Syracuse, N.Y., which state and federal officials have touted as a way to reconnect communities once severed by Interstate construction. State officials recently announced the award of a second contract for the project, but over half of the plan remains temporarily barred from moving forward by a state judge. We understand their success is our success, so we approach each project one relationship at a time. We succeed because we understand the ultimate needs and requirements of our clients.

New York DOT Advances Syracuse I-81 Viaduct Project

“The Interstate 81 Viaduct Project will serve as a national example of how thoughtful infrastructure can bring people together, promote growth, and increase prosperity for all communities,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said at the groundbreaking. Salt City Constructors, LLC is comprised of three separate contractors consisting of Lancaster Development and Tully Construction Co., LLC dba L&T Construction, D.A. Collins Construction Co., Inc. and Cold Spring Construction Co., Inc.

In December, Metro held a groundbreaking for advanced utility work on the first segment of the project. Metro has also been working with the Federal Transit Administration on federal funding and last month received a $600 million grant through the state Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). Metro has also been holding community open houses to offer more information about upcoming construction activities and what to expect, small business support programs and introduction of project staff. Provisions within the contract will ensure SFTC implements a robust plan to interact cross-culturally with the many diverse communities along the project corridor. The company was founded in 2002 by Aaron and Britton Glynn as a way to better control the construction process, insure quality detail in construction, and deliver projects to clients in a more efficient way.

During Phase I, SFTC will complete design validation, identify and negotiate early works packages, such as advanced utility relocations and final design, and develop the scope of work and price for Phase 2. Phase 1 will end if Metro and SFTC agree to a guaranteed maximum price and Metro will issue a supplement to the project contract to proceed to Phase 2, kicking off the construction portion of the project. As defined, the Design-Build method offers the client a single point of responsibility, thereby reducing Client risk and overall cost. We are able to manage your project from conceptual design through construction as your primary contact. We have found that this way of working offers a smooth transition between design and construction, more attention to detail during construction, and a more effective line of communication for the entire team.

Aaron and Britton both hold a Masters degree in Architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture and understand firsthand the importance in executing thoughtful design and construction. The third planned contract’s scope would include improvements to streets in Syracuse’s Northside neighborhood, including rehabilitation of Bear Street between I-690 and the planned Business Loop 81. Dynamic Real Estate Partners is a client-driven real estate development firm. The company builds key relationships one project at a time to create successful and profitable outcomes while enhancing and benefiting the communities where it develops.

As part of the project, HNTB landscape architects  designed small passive recreation public spaces along the roadway. These small parks include green infrastructure to collect and filter stormwater run-off, while providing the community with new gathering spaces with benches, special paving and lighting. They also collaborated with HNTB structural engineers to create safe and comfortable bicyclist/pedestrian access and provided landscape design and restoration on the Queens approach at First Calvary Cemetery. The scope of the first two contracts for the I-81 Viaduct Project includes reconstruction of interchanges at existing I-481 north and south of Syracuse.

Anthony Construction Corp. plus Rifenburg Construction Corp. and Crane-Hogan Structural Systems Inc. The new 6.7-mile light rail is planned to include 11 new light rail stations along Van Nuys Boulevard and will improve connections to and access between Van Nuys and Pacoima. Several Equity Focus Communities, which are census tracts that have a significant concentration of underserved populations, are close to the planned rail line.

The conservation of energy is a fundamental principle in physics that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another. In the case of a catapult, as the device releases the potential energy stored in the flexible material is converted into kinetic energy as the projectile is launched. This Lego catapult uses tension from a rubber band to launch the projectile. The rubber band is attached to the front end of the throwing arm and to the back of the base. By pushing down the throwing arm, the rubber band is stretched and energy is stored in it. When the throwing arm is released, the rubber band contracts and propels the projectile forward.

Easy Motion Science Experiment that Will Wow Your Kids

Hope you will enjoy this wonderful DIY project that inspires a lot of investigation opportunities. It is also important to have a designated launch area and to follow proper launching procedures. Since then we have adapted catapults to have fun and launch various objects, but did you know that there is an actual science behind how far an object would go? It’s true the heavier the object or the further back you pull the catapult will determine the trajectory of each object.

Catapult competitions, where engineers and enthusiasts gather to launch all manner of objects, are gaining popularity. From pumpkin chuckin’ contests to precision shot-put challenges, there’s a catapult competition for everyone. I placed both parts of the tower onto the base and roughly measured the distance.

Upcycle items in your kitchen junk drawer for hours of catapult target practice. Catapults were used in ancient times as a means of launching projectiles over long distances to know down castle walls or launch stones or flaming projectiles over the walls. Plan the materials that you might need to build the perfect catapult for your school project. A lolly stick catapult demonstrates energy being converted from one type to another ( potential to kinetic ) and transferred from one object to another ( catapult arm to the ball ). Additionally, consider incorporating a competitive or collaborative element to make the project more engaging. For example, you could organize a catapult competition where students compete to launch projectiles the farthest or hit a target accurately.

We developed cannons and missiles, which have much greater range and accuracy and required less manpower to fire. The idea of using the sudden release of stored to launch something, however, is still useful. The counterweight would be attached to one end of a beam that pivoted on the machine's frame.

It's pretty scary when one of those snaps at full tension. Also, on one side, install the other U-bolt, facing inwards, through one of the posts - this will be a tie-off point. Add a ton of padding to the cross brace - you'll need this if you don't want the catapult/arm to break. Each segment is designed to simplify the process, making it accessible and enjoyable. The next section is the perfect place to begin your journey into crafting an exciting, operative popsicle stick catapult. This Popsicle stick catapult design is an AWESOME STEM activity for kids of all ages! Exploring physics has never been so exciting for kids because everyone loves to launch stuff into the air.

Avoid using hard or heavy objects to prevent injury or damage. After launching the projectiles, kids can measure and record the launch distances at different angles or with different weights. Analyzing the data allows them to draw conclusions about how changes in the design or launch parameters affect performance. Once you’ve mastered the basics, why not take your catapult-building skills to the next level?

The House on Mango Street Book Review

the house on mango street

Esperanza tells her own story through vignettes, each of which reveals a bit more of who she is and who she wants to be. She observes the people around her and reflects on her experiences, but she does not connect them in a way that suggests she understands their greater meaning in her life. She is too young, and too involved, to narrate objectively, and we must piece together her stories. Esperanza matures throughout the novel, and by the end she has gained a clearer sense of who she is.

Follow Common Sense Media

Cisneros, like Esperanza, dreamed as a child of having her own house, and she was able to achieve this dream through her literary successes. But the house she now owns in San Antonio, Texas has caused some controversy because of its bright purple color, which Cisneros chose herself. Some people argue that the color doesn’t fit with its historical neighborhood, while others support it as a statement of Mexican culture and Cisneros’s own creativity.

Cisneros has written that for some of the stories in The House on Mango Street – like “The Family of Little Feet” – she started with a title and then had to make a story for it, while the first line of “The Three Sisters” came to her in a dream. Created by the original team behind SparkNotes, LitCharts are the world's best literature guides. The novel is composed of 44 interconnected vignettes, of varying lengths, ranging from one or two paragraphs to several pages.

She befriends Sally, an attractive girl who wears heavy makeup and provocative clothing, and who is physically abused and forbidden from leaving her home by her strongly religious father. Sally's and Esperanza's friendship is compromised when Sally ditches Esperanza for a boy at a carnival, leaving Esperanza to be sexually assaulted by a group of men. She recounts other instances of assault she has faced, like an older man forcibly kissing her at her first job. Esperanza's traumatic experiences and observations of the women in her neighborhood, many of whom are controlled by the men in their lives, only further cement her desire to leave Mango Street. It is only when she meets Rachel and Lucy's aunts, who tell her fortune, that she realizes her experiences on Mango Street have shaped her identity and will remain with her even if she leaves.

Where to Read

Esperanza must define herself both as a woman and as an artist, and her perception of her identity changes over the course of the novel. In the beginning of the novel Esperanza wants to change her name so that she can define herself on her own terms, instead of accepting a name that expresses her family heritage. She wants to separate herself from her parents and her younger sister in order to create her own life, and changing her name seems to her an important step in that direction. Later, after she becomes more sexually aware, Esperanza would like to be “beautiful and cruel” so men will like her but not hurt her, and she pursues that goal by becoming friends with Sally. After she is assaulted, she doesn’t want to define herself as “beautiful and cruel” anymore, and she is, once again, unsure of who she is. She sees that patriarchy is prominent in the current neighborhood, where she feels suffocated.

Although the novel begins narrowly, with the immediate family and house as subjects, Mango Street itself, with its larger community, eventually occupies Esperanza’s life, with home and family constituting only the starting point. The first sections of The House on Mango Street introduce Esperanza’s storytelling style. Cisneros calls these short chapters “lazy poems,” because, like many poems, the chapters are short, do not tell full stories, and rely on the sounds of words for added meaning or emphasis. Some of the stories are just series of observations, while others contain more complete scenes.

Lucy, Rachel, Esperanza, and Esperanza’s little sister, Nenny, have many adventures in the small space of their neighborhood. They buy a bike, learn exciting stories about boys from a young woman named Marin, explore a junk shop, and have intimate conversations while playing Double Dutch (jumping rope). The girls are on the brink of puberty and sometimes find themselves sexually vulnerable, such as when they walk around their neighborhood in high-heeled shoes or when Esperanza is kissed by an older man at her first job. During the first half of the year, the girls are content to live and play in their child’s world.

Along with chronicling Esperanza’s growth, the book’s vignettes also move through brief descriptions of her neighbors. While some of these portraits involve eccentric or memorable men (Meme Ortiz, Geraldo, or Earl), most of them involve women who are trapped in some way. There is Mamacita, who does not leave her apartment because she is afraid of the English language, and Rafaela, whose husband keeps her locked up because she is beautiful. Alicia must stay up all night studying so she can graduate from college and get a good job someday, but her father makes her wake up early to make tortillas and do the chores. Rosa Vargas is imprisoned by the impossible task of taking care of her many unruly children. There is also Minerva, who writes poems like Esperanza, but is already married with two children and a husband who beats her.

Esperanza does not have any privacy, and she resolves that she will someday leave Mango Street and have a house all her own. The first few sections of The House on Mango Street suggest that Esperanza will focus on the importance and experiences of her family, but this focus eventually expands. Esperanza’s family and house fill these first few sections, so specifically that Esperanza even discusses the security she finds in the smell of her mother’s hair. However, the introduction of the family is only an introduction to what will become Esperanza’s larger family, the barrio. She may find comfort in her mother’s hair, but Esperanza does not actually mention her mother again for another thirty-five sections.

Esperanza is just a young girl from the barrio, hardly knowledgeable enough to generalize about the Chinese, and her observation suggests wisdom beyond her years. Most likely Esperanza heard such a theory from her mother or one of the other mujeres, or women, surrounding her. Esperanza accepts more responsibility for women as she matures, and as she does, she confronts other women’s indifference more directly. At first Esperanza is responsible only for her younger sister, Nenny, but her responsibilities grow when she befriends Sally. Esperanza tries to save Sally from having to kiss a group of boys in “The Monkey Garden.” However, when Esperanza tries to enlist one of the boys’ mothers to help her, the mother refuses. Later, Sally abandons Esperanza and leaves her vulnerable to male attackers in “Red Clowns.” Esperanza expects female friends to protect each other, and Sally does not fulfill this responsibility.

Minerva, who like Esperanza is creative and fond of writing poems and has children and a husband who physically abuses her. The most interesting moment in her life in that house arrives when all the children enjoy riding the Cadillac of Louie’s cousin but he faces immediate arrest by police for the act of stealing. Esperanza’s great-grandmother, also named Esperanza, is the first of many women who are trapped by men, society, and their own sense of defeat. The elder Esperanza was initially a strong woman, but after her forced marriage she spent most of her days sitting by a window. Windows appear frequently in situations similar to the elder Esperanza’s, suggesting that these trapped women do not accept their cages blindly but instead are always aware of the world outside that is off-limits to them. Esperanza demonstrates her own awareness of the larger world when she observes that being born in the year of the horse isn’t necessarily bad luck, but that the Mexicans and Chinese don’t like their women to be strong like horses.

Everyman’s Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author’s life and times. Esperanza decides she’ll combine sexuality with autonomy by being “beautiful and cruel” like Sally and the women in movies. However, Esperanza finds out that being “beautiful and cruel” is impossible in her male-dominated society when she experiences sexual assault. In her dreams about being with Sire, Esperanza is always in control, but in her encounter with the boys who assault her, she has no power whatsoever. The assault makes Esperanza realize that achieving true independence won’t be possible if she pursues relationships with the men in her neighborhood.

These three, along with Esperanza’s little sister Nenny, have many small adventures in the first part of the book, including searching through a labyrinthine junk store and learning from an older girl named Marin. While exploring her world, Esperanza experiences the shame of poverty, the unfairness of racism, and the beauty of poetry and music. The struggle for self-definition is a common theme in a coming-of-age novel, or bildungsroman, and in The House on Mango Street, Esperanza’s struggle to define herself underscores her every action and encounter.

Worst book my child has read in a long time

The book has sold more than 6 million copies, has been translated into over 20 languages and is required reading in many schools and universities across the United States. Her own hair doesn’t do what she wants it to do, while her sister’s is smooth and oily. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong -- not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her.

Nintendo Switch Games for Family Fun

Before settling into their new home, a small and run-down building with crumbling red bricks, the family moved frequently, always dreaming of having a house of their own. Pining for a white, wooden house with a big yard and many trees, Esperanza finds her life on Mango Street suffocating and yearns to escape. Esperanza begins the novel with detailed descriptions of the minute behaviors and characteristics of her family members and unusual neighbors, providing a picture of the neighborhood and examples of the many influential people surrounding her. She describes time spent with her younger sister, Nenny, and two older girls she befriends in the neighborhood; Alicia, a promising young college student with a dead mother, and Marin, who spends her days babysitting her younger cousins.

It means sadness, it means waiting.”Told in a series of vignettes—sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous—Cisneros’s masterpiece is a classic story of childhood and self-discovery and one of the greatest neighborhood novels of all time. Like Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street or Toni Morrison’s Sula, it makes a world through people and their voices, and it does so in language that is poetic and direct. This gorgeous coming-of-age novel is a celebration of the power of telling one’s story and of being proud of where you’re from.

Sexuality versus Autonomy

She is fully aware that she does not belong there, everything about it is described in negative terms delineating everything that it isn't versus what it is. When she attends a funeral where the three sisters see her and predict that she’s going to leave mango street. However, her meeting with Lucy and Rachel and their outgoing aunt shows that she has identified herself with Mango Street. As of now, she decides to resort to poetry to escape the situation emotionally but later escape physically too. The novel ends when Esperanza vows to help the residents of Mango Street, for they are very much with her in her memories. As time passes, Esperanza starts becoming mature not only physically but also sexually. She shapes her mindset to become women who do not surrender to a man’s dominance, yet showcases her ability to be an attractive woman to men.

Eventually, Esperanza decides she does not need to set herself apart from the others in her neighborhood or her family heritage by changing her name, and she stops forcing herself to develop sexually, which she isn’t fully ready for. She accepts her place in her community and decides that the most important way she can define herself is as a writer. As a writer, she observes and interacts with the world in a way that sets her apart from non-writers, giving her the legitimate new identity she’s been searching for. Writing promises to help her leave Mango Street emotionally, and possibly physically as well. Alicia is a hardworking girl who has high aspirations to leave this neighborhood and get a better job so have to study in the morning but her father makes her do the chores. Rafaela, the woman who won’t step out of the house because her husband locks her up as he is insecure about her beauty.

Meanwhile, during the beginning of the following school year, Esperanza befriends Sally, a girl her age who is more sexually mature than Lucy or Rachel. Esperanza is not completely comfortable with Sally’s sexual experience, and their friendship results in a crisis when Sally leaves Esperanza alone, and a group of boys sexually assaults Esperanza in her absence. After moving to the house, Esperanza quickly befriends Lucy and Rachel, two Chicana girls who live across the street.

The House on Mango Street is a 1984 novel by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros. Structured as a series of vignettes, it tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. Based in part on Cisneros's own experience, the novel follows Esperanza over the span of one year in her life, as she enters adolescence and begins to face the realities of life as a young woman in a poor and patriarchal community. Elements of the Mexican-American culture and themes of social class, race, sexuality, identity, and gender are interwoven throughout the novel.

Ultimately, Esperanza understands that even if and when she leaves Mango Street, she will continue to take responsibility for the women in her neighborhood. Esperanza observes the people around her and realizes that if not knowing or not mastering the language creates powerlessness, then having the ability to manipulate language will give her power. Her Aunt Lupe tells her to keep writing because it will keep her free, and Esperanza eventually understands what her aunt means. Writing keeps Esperanza spiritually free, because putting her experiences into words gives her power over them. If she can use beautiful language to write about a terrible experience, then the experience seems less awful. Esperanza’s spiritual freedom may eventually give her the power to be literally free as well.

The short chapters also reflect the short attention span of a young girl, and this storytelling technique seems appropriate considering Esperanza’s age. Esperanza has not really learned how to tell stories correctly, and she relies on fragments that are grouped together loosely. The chapters are only tenuously connected, and an element of one often triggers another observation in the next. In “The House on Mango Street,” Esperanza complains that the house has only one bedroom, while in “Hairs” she explains what it’s like to sleep in that bedroom with her whole family. Describing her siblings’ hair then reminds her that she cannot talk to her brothers outside the house, and “Boys and Girls” follows. The entire novel continues this way, with both random and not so random connections and logic.

Aunt Lupe – Aunt Lupe is primarily present in the vignette "Born Bad," in which Esperanza scolds herself for mimicking her dying aunt. She, her parents, her brothers, Carlos and Kiki, and her sister, Nenny, moved to Mango Street when the pipes broke in their previous apartment and the landlord refused to fix them. The family had dreamed of a white house with lots of space and bathrooms, but the house on Mango Street has only one bedroom and one bathroom. Esperanza notes that this is not the house that she envisioned, and although her parents tell her it’s only temporary, she doubts they’ll move anytime soon.

Passenger and freight trains can be heard rumbling below, carrying goods to nearby warehouses or passengers to Union Station.

The most visually impressive feature is the pair of geyser fountains, which shoot water to incredible heights. Jog over to the promontory at the north end of the Lake (fronted by the Depression-era Lady of the Lake Statue) to witness the fountains appear to ‘soar’ over the Financial District’s tall skyscrapers, situated in the backdrop. You will never again consider traveling thousands of miles just to visit Central Park. This list is of buildings approved or proposed over 300 feet (91 m) throughout the city. The tallest buildings currently proposed are The LA Grand Hotel at 1,108 feet (338 m), Figueroa Centre at 975 feet (297 m), and Angels Landing at 854 feet (260 m).

Los Angeles (and especially downtown) then went through a large building boom that lasted from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, during which time the city saw the completion of 17 of its 30 tallest buildings, including the U.S. Bank Tower, the Aon Center, and Two California Plaza.[6] Modern skyscrapers are difficult and expensive to construct in Los Angeles, as well as the resulting difficulty of adhering to the city's rigorous engineering standards. Other skyscraper hubs in Los Angeles include Century Boulevard by Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the Hollywood district in central Los Angeles, as well as Warner Center, Encino and Universal City in the San Fernando Valley. Los Angeles's west side has so many skyscrapers that often Wilshire Boulevard in the Westwood District and Century City's skyscrapers are confused with being DTLA by visitors arriving from LAX.

One is that the Republicans’ narrow House majority empowers the fringe. Of course, members of the latter group don’t admit to the impossibility of their goals; that would ruin the con. They insist that with enough willpower, particularly among their leaders, they could impose their will on the Democratic-controlled Senate and White House. They make that case on television, on social media and in floor speeches. No, the difference is largely over tactics, rhetoric and psychology. One faction, comprising an overwhelming majority of the House GOP caucus, is interested in accomplishing the possible.

The outreach team also developed collateral pieces that contained consistent project branding and messaging. These pieces included fact sheets, FAQs, closure and detour maps, informational fliers for hotels to distribute to their guests, promotional pieces for businesses during construction and a weekly construction alert. We also managed a 24/7 live response answering service where we handle constituent questions and concerns. TRC provided comprehensive public outreach services for the City of Santa Monica during reconstruction of the iconic California Incline Bridge.

Tucked away in a county park, Autumn’s Peak is a true diamond in the rough when it comes to views of downtown. The peak can be most quickly accessed from the Olympic Forest parking lot, at a trailhead that is marked by a rattlesnake warning sign. The trails are poorly marked the entire way, so it is advisable to check in with the park staff at the community center before beginning. The hiker who reaches the summit will see the downtown skyline rise majestically above the surrounding urban sprawl, while standing defiantly against the towering peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains. The views extend in all directions, offering particularly good perspectives of the Mid-Wilshire business district and Santa Monica Bay.

How Big Was the Titanic Compared to a Modern Cruise Ship?

titanic compared to modern cruise

It was delivered in January 2022 and is the fifth vessel in the Oasis class of cruise ships. Modern cruise ships are, on average, 20% longer than the Titanic and twice as high. The average Royal Caribbean cruise ship is 325 meters long, 14 decks high and has a gross tonnage of 133,000.

Cabin and amenity comparison: Titanic vs. modern cruise ships

In contrast, Titanic had only two restaurants, a swimming pool, and a gymnasium. When it comes to passenger and crew capacity, modern cruise ships surpass the Titanic by a significant margin. In addition to larger capacity, modern cruise ships also have more crew members to ensure that passengers receive the best possible service.

Wonder of the Seas Vs Titanic — 8 Key Differences

The Titanic had a total of 2240 passengers on board when she sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. The sinking of the Titanic is one of the most famous maritime disasters in history. The Oasis-class ships we have reviewed are big enough to contain the Titanic itself. Despite this, because of Titanic’s place in history, it will always remain as the largest ship ever built, at least in our collective memory, but not in actual fact. At that time, the Titanic’s reign as the largest ship afloat became a short one, as was its time in service. It made its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, and only sailed for a mere five days before the fatal collision that caused it to sink in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of April 15, 1912.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: my opinion after I’ve tried both!

While the Titanic had a grand staircase and a music room, modern cruise ships offer a wide range of entertainment options, from movie theaters and casinos to spas and fitness centers. In terms of entertainment, modern cruise ships offer a wide range of options, from Broadway-style shows to live music, comedy, and magic performances. They also have state-of-the-art facilities for watching movies, playing video games, and more.

Cutting-edge entertainment systems for an immersive experience

All these vessels were luxurious ocean liners that offered passengers safe passage in style and comfort at the time. The Titanic, at maximum capacity, would have been able to hold 2,435 passengers and 892 crew, for a total combined capacity of 3,327 people. If you take the average cruise ship today, including all the small ships that often have fewer than 100 passengers, then the average is almost identical – around 2,450 guests and 750 crew. Modern cruise ships offer extensive accommodation options, even though I get confused sometimes. From their ordinary staterooms and cabins to their junior suites and grand suites that are nearly 2 to 3 decks high. The Titanic’s captain, Edward Smith, canceled the scheduled lifeboat drill the day the ship encountered the iceberg.

Year-Round Swimming Bliss

Third-class passengers, though more limited in options, still found enjoyment in their designated smoking and common rooms where they could socialize and play games. The cabin facilities on the Titanic varied significantly across its class system. First-class passengers enjoyed spacious, beautifully decorated rooms with fine furnishings that resembled luxury hotel rooms. Second-class cabins, while less opulent than those in first-class, still offered a good level of comfort with features such as oak paneling and private washbasins. In contrast, third-class accommodations were smaller, consisting primarily of bunk beds in small, cramped rooms without the luxurious amenities found in first-class. In 1912, the Titanic received iceberg warnings but lacked the technology needed to accurately map their locations in real time.

Beyond the sinking of the Titanic, it also lost the HMHS Britannic and the Republic, all in a 10-year period. The Titanic was only equipped with 20 lifeboats, or enough lifeboats for 1,178 people. The ship was also outfitted with approximately 3,500 life jackets and 48 life rings. However, those were of little use, given the temperature of the water and the quick onset of hypothermia.

Built For Speed in All Weathers

Each of these ships has seven neighborhoods that cater to their passengers’ every whim and needs. Modern cruise ships have many technological and design advancements that the Titanic did not have. For example, modern ships have stabilizers that reduce the amount of movement felt by passengers in rough seas. They also have advanced navigation systems, satellite communication, and safety features like smoke detectors and sprinkler systems.

From the size of the vessels to their shared capability for luxurious amenities, there are plenty of points of comparison between these two types of ships. While modern cruise ships can have between 3 and 18 decks, the average cruise ship will have a similar number to the Titanic – usually between 9 and 11. Even if you look at the 40th largest cruise ship on the oceans today, which is Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, you’ll still end up with a vessel that’s significantly larger than the Titanic. Mariner of the Seas measures in at a mere 139,863 gross tons and just over a thousand feet long, with capacity for 3,114 passengers and 1,185 crew members.

The Costa Concordia disaster of 2012 has become one of the most tragic maritime disasters in recent history. The catastrophe resulted in the death of 32 passengers and crew and the injury of many more. The ship had departed from the Italian port of Civitavecchia, heading for Savona in northwest Italy, when it struck an uncharted rock just off the coast of the island of Giglio. The impact of the collision resulted in a large hole being ripped into the vessel’s hull, causing it to take on water rapidly. The Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is the last remaining ocean liner in the world. This grand vessel is one of a kind, boasting luxurious amenities and incredible history.

The Titanic was built in one piece by riveting large plates together whereas modern cruise ships are built in smaller sections, then loaded into place using large cranes. The modular way that modern cruise ships are built allows them to be built higher faster than using traditional ship building methods. The sinking of the Titanic happened over 100 years ago and although she was the largest ship at the time of her launch a lot has changed since. In this article, we will compare the length, height and tonnage of the Titanic to a variety of modern cruise ships.

Second-class passengers slept in bunk beds, in cabins that came with either two or four bunk beds apiece. The next world’s largest cruise ship not yet launched but on order is Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, slated to debut in 2022, and it measures much the same. When it comes to speed, the Titanic was a relatively fast ocean liner for its time. Speed was an important factor for transatlantic liners like the Titanic, which aimed to reduce travel time between Europe and North America.
